What does “tax-free” mean in the UAE?

🇦🇪 What does “tax-free” mean in the UAE?
For an individual living and working in the UAE, there is currently no UAE federal personal income tax on salary or ordinary personal employment income. That’s the main reason people describe the UAE as “tax-free.”
However, the UAE does have other taxes. For example, the UAE has 5% VAT on most taxable supplies, and businesses can be subject to Corporate Tax. The standard UAE Corporate Tax rate is 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000, subject to the rules and exemptions that apply.
🇮🇳 UAE vs India — simple example
Suppose someone earns the equivalent of ₹30 lakh a year from employment.
In India, individual income is subject to income tax according to the applicable tax regime and slabs. Under the current new regime for AY 2026–27, the top slab is 30% on income above ₹24 lakh, with the actual tax depending on the full calculation, rebates and applicable surcharge/cess.
In the UAE, if that person is genuinely living and working there and their income is personal employment income, there is generally no UAE personal income tax on that salary.
So, very simply:

Salary → Income tax may apply → You receive the after-tax amount.
UAE:
Salary → No U
